A Navy analysis has confirmed that the wreck of PT 109--the World War II boat under John F. Kennedy’s command when it was sunk Aug. 2, 1943, by the Japanese--likely has been found in 1,200 feet of water off the Solomon Islands by shipwreck hunter Robert Ballard.
Ballard said his team used sonar technology and remote-controlled vehicles to find and photograph a torpedo launcher and torpedo of the type carried by PT boats.
The National Geographic Society sponsored the expedition.
