Rescuers using shovels struggled to search for survivors or bodies today after massive landslides triggered by torrential rains swept two villages in eastern Nepal.

State radio said that Monday’s mudslides had killed 43 people in Sungdel and Gipsung villages in Khotang district, about 190 miles east of the capital, Katmandu.

Police said at least 50 people, including women and children, were missing after the landslides in the Himalayan kingdom.
