Officials granted a reprieve to an American journalist who was ordered deported after he was found not guilty of violating Zimbabwe’s harsh new media laws.
Andrew Meldrum, a permanent resident of Zimbabwe, appealed Monday’s order demanding that he leave within 24 hours. Officials granted him a 30-hour delay so they could respond to his appeal.
Meldrum, 50, a correspondent for Britain’s Guardian newspaper, was acquitted of publishing a false story, a crime that carries a two-year sentence.
