Barbecued Chicken, Haiti Style

Share

It’s easy to miss TiGeorges’ Chicken, a small eatery along a strip of Glendale Boulevard near downtown Los Angeles. But do look for it, because TiGeorges’ offers something rare in L.A.--genuine Haitian-style barbecued chicken. Marinated overnight, then grilled over avocado wood, the chicken is smothered in garlic-wine sauce and accompanied by sides such as red beans and rice, green salad and pikliz, a finely shredded cabbage and carrot pickle. Haiti’s famous ti malis sauce is on hand, but watch out--this is one of the hottest sauces you will ever taste. (Its name means “little malice.”)

An order of a quarter chicken (choice of white or dark meat), red beans and rice, green salad and pikliz is $4.75. Whole and half chickens are also available. A 24-ounce jar of pikliz (spicier than that served at the restaurant) is $4 at TiGeorges’ Chicken, 309 N. Glendale Blvd., Los Angeles. (213) 353-9994.
