International Loophole

Share

I was interested to hear that the Bush administration had succeeded in extorting the United Nations Security Council to exempt U.S. troops engaged in peacekeeping activities from prosecution for one year in the recently established International Criminal Court (“U.S. Granted Immunity for Peacekeepers,” July 13).

Had the administration’s strong-arm tactics failed, our troops might have had to answer in court if they had engaged in genocide or other crimes against humanity. Now they can do so with impunity.

Such a proud moment for a country that claims to be rooted in civil rights, the rule of law and equal justice for all.

After all, those principles don’t apply unless you’re born in the U.S. Do they?
