The U.S. Justice Department announced indictments against five alleged leaders of the Muslim separatist group Abu Sayyaf for a kidnapping spree that led to the death of an American missionary and several others in the Philippines.

None of the five men indicted were in custody, officials said, but the five-count indictment gives U.S. authorities the grounds upon which to seek extradition if they are captured. If convicted, they could face the death penalty.

The indictments identified the five as Khadafi Abubakar Janjalani, Isnilon Totoni Hapilon, Aldam Tilao, Jainal Antel Sali Jr. and Hamsiraji Marusi Sali. The charges included conspiracy and hostage-taking resulting in death.
