BioPulse International Inc. settled a lawsuit filed by federal regulators, agreeing to stop claiming its insulin-injection treatments can eliminate cancerous tumors and effectively treat other serious diseases.

Without admitting or denying wrongdoing, the company agreed to stop advertising that the treatments, which involve inducing sleep by injecting insulin into cancer patients, can “starve” tumors, according to court papers filed in San Francisco federal court. Patients paid up to $40,000 for the treatments.

The company, based in South Jordan, Utah, also agreed to stop making health claims about a treatment in which patients sit in front of a light source.

Last year, BioPulse’s cancer clinic in Tijuana was shut down by local health officials after the U.S. Federal Trade Commission told the company it was investigating its advertising claims. The clinic’s treatments included inducing daily comas in patients and injecting them with vaccines made from their urine.

BioPulse executives couldn’t be reached for comment.
