Swollen rivers broke through embankments in northern Bangladesh, drowning 20 children in flooded villages and raising the death toll from monsoon rains in South Asia to 465.

The Brahmaputra River broke through a mud embankment 120 miles north of the capital, Dhaka. At least 11 children were swept away, relief officials said. Nine children drowned in neighboring districts, they said.

Fed by torrential rains, flooded rivers have stranded or displaced nearly 13 million people in Bangladesh, India and Nepal in the last month.
