Glass and Wood Blend by Canyon

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Herb Stewart--a classical guitarist who became a book publisher and then a general contractor--created this house from a small post-and-beam one built in the ‘50s.

About this house: Stewart and his wife, Susan Jllien, purchased the property 16 years ago. The house as it looks today was seven years in the making. “I had a couple of architects help me initially, but then I took it from there,” he said. “I do all my own work.”

Focusing on finishes, he mixed the color of the plaster to complement the limestone, a golden beige with a hint of grayish green, and he handpicked all the woods in the house, from the maple floors to the redwood hallway, 40 feet long and 22 feet high.

He also oversaw design of the limestone pool and its redwood deck. The irregularly shaped pool has a waterfall that spills into the spa and overlooks a canyon 100 feet deep.
