Thousands Demand New Way of Fighting Hunger
Thousands of demonstrators, including Indonesian, Mexican and African peasants, marched through Rome two days before an international food summit, to demand new tactics in the war on hunger.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization summit is pushing the goal of halving world hunger by 2015. But protesters accuse world leaders of putting trade above agriculture. “It is not a problem of quantity of food, it’s an economic and political problem,” French farmer Jose Bove said.
Genetically modified crops are expected to be one of the most controversial summit issues. Crowd estimates varied from 10,000 to 40,000.
