Conservatives Poised to Control Parliament

French President Jacques Chirac’s conservative forces appeared set to seize control of Parliament after a commanding victory in a first-round election, partial results showed.

With 75% of the vote counted, the Interior Ministry said Chirac’s coalition of center-right parties won 33.2% of the vote. The Socialists and their allies won about 25.8%. The right-wing National Front received 11%. The remaining votes went to smaller parties.
