U.S. Consulate Car Bombing in Pakistan Kills 5
A suicide attacker crashed a bomb-laden car into a guard post outside the U.S. Consulate here this morning, killing five people and injuring dozens.
Police said the bomb was concealed in a white car that the driver crashed into the guard post, destroying part of the wall. It also damaged the nearby Marriott hotel and dozens of cars.
Witnesses reported seeing body parts scattered at the scene. At least one of those killed was a Pakistani plainclothes guard.
The Reuters news services reported that all five of those killed were Pakistanis.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene, and police sealed off the area.
Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was abducted in Karachi in January and slain while working on a story about Islamic militants. On March 17, a grenade attack at a church in Islamabad, the capital, killed five people, including two Americans.
Last month, 11 French engineers and three others were killed in a suicide bombing in front of a Karachi hotel less than a mile from today’s blast.
