U.S. Army Vehicle Hits 2 S. Koreans
Two South Korean girls died Thursday when a U.S. Army armored vehicle struck them during a training exercise in a suburb of Seoul, the Army said in a statement.
The accident happened three days after hundreds of anti-American protesters clashed with police over the death of a South Korean worker at a U.S. military base.
“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event,” Lt. Gen. Daniel Zanini, the commander of the 8th U.S. Army in Seoul, said in a statement. “We want to express my heartfelt condolences to the families of the children and pledge our resolve to vigorously investigate” the crash.
The United States has 37,000 troops in South Korea. The cause of the accident was under investigation by South Korean and U.S. military police, the statement said.
On Monday, about 200 protesters outside a U.S. base demanded compensation and an apology over the death of a South Korean worker who died after suffering an electric shock.
