Silica Gel Protects Electronic Parts

I DIDN’T KNOW THAT

Question: What is in the little packets that are often found in electronic components, drugs and so forth? Is it harmful?

Answer: The packets contain a drying agent called silica gel. It is used to absorb any water vapor that leaks into the package, preventing the water from damaging the contents. Water vapor reaching electronic components can cause erosion, for example, shortening their life span.

Silica gel is a porous form of silicon dioxide--effectively, it is sand. It can absorb about 40% of its own weight in water and can significantly reduce the relative humidity in a closed container.

It is harmless to eat because it passes through the digestive system untouched.
