Lab’s Supplements Shouldn’t Be Taken
State health officials are warning consumers to stop using remaining supplies of supplements from BotanicLab, maker of the recalled PC SPES.
BotanicLab, which closed its doors earlier this month, recalled its popular prostate cancer remedy after the California Department of Health Services found it was contaminated with the prescription drugs warfarin, diethylstilbesterol (DES), ethinyl estradiol and indomethacin.
More recent testing of other BotanicLab products by the state has also turned up contamination with ingredients available only in prescription medications, including alprazolam, indomethacin and DES.
Consumers should stop taking Arthrin, Hepastat, Neutralis, OA Plus, Osporo, Poena and RA SPES, all made by BotanicLab, according to the Department of Health Services. Individuals using these products and taking any other prescribed medication should seek medical advice, said Diana M. Bonta, state health director.
Unsupervised exposure to prescription drugs could cause serious health problems, Bonta said. Alprazolam can be addictive and exacerbates the effects of alcohol and other depressants.
DES and ethinyl estradiol are estrogens that can affect fertility and cause cardiovascular problems. Indomethacin can cause ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, nausea, vomiting, headache, depression and fatigue.
