Train Driver in Custody for Crash That Killed 281

The driver of a train that crashed in central Tanzania, killing 281 people and injuring hundreds of others, is in custody and being interrogated, a police spokesman said in Dar es Salaam.
A police official in the administrative capital, Dodoma, identified the driver as God Chiwelesa.
The passenger train was carrying more than 1,200 people when it rolled backward down a hill and smashed into a cargo train Monday. The brakes apparently failed.
