Three men were arrested in eastern India in connection with a January shooting attack at an American cultural center, police said Saturday.

Police said the three were close associates of the men on motorcycles who killed five police officers guarding the American Center in the eastern city of Calcutta on Jan. 22.

The arrested men--Allaudin Khan, Mohammad Tahir and Niyamat Baig--apparently gave the attackers shelter after the attack, police said.

They were detained Friday night in Jagatpur, about 25 miles north of Bhubaneshwar, the capital of Orissa state. They were taken Saturday to Calcutta, police said.

Indian police last month brought alleged mob leader Aftab Ansari, the main suspect in the case, back from the United Arab Emirates. Police allege that Ansari has links to Islamic extremists--including Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, accused of involvement in the killing of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
