A retired oilman has pledged his estate, worth an estimated $150 million, to the University of Texas at Austin, which school officials said was the largest gift ever made to a single public university.

The donation by John “Jack” Jackson, who graduated from the university in 1940, is a testament to the role that UT played in his life, university President Larry Faulkner said in announcing the gift.

Jackson, 88, could not attend the announcement because he was ill at home in Dallas, Faulkner said.
