U.S. in Afghanistan

Share

Oh, oh, I smell Vietnam all over again. “Avowals Aside, U.S.’ Afghan Role Has Become That of Peacekeeper” (Feb. 25) states that “Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld continues to argue against a U.S. peacekeeping role in the country. But he acknowledged last week that such a mission could become the endgame for American forces.” It goes on to state that “Pentagon officials have suggested that [an Afghan] army could be constituted in as little as six months” but that military analysts warn that “establishing such an army, however, will take time.” Get ready to connect the dots.
