Public Can Comment on Nuclear Fuel Storage

Share

The public has until April 29 to comment on a plan to temporarily store partly spent nuclear fuel in large concrete vaults at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Plant officials want to wrap the waste in two layers of steel and put it in reinforced concrete casks. Spent fuel is now being stored in temporary cooling ponds, but “dry casking” is considered safer because it requires less maintenance and is less susceptible to accidents caused by human error.

Two nuclear reactors at San Onofre provide energy for 2.2 million homes from Santa Barbara to San Diego.
