Undergraduates Form Union

Resident assistants at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst voted Tuesday to form a union in what is believed to be the nation’s first among undergraduate students.

The vote makes the 360 assistants in 41 residence halls members of United Auto Workers Local 2322, which also represents university graduate students and research assistants.

The residents, who supervise dormitory residents and activities, say their $5,000 compensation package is not enough. The Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission ruled in January that the assistants had the right to vote on union representation.
