Americans are at least 10 times more likely to be murdered on the day of their birth than at any other point in their lives, according to a study by federal health officials.

A startling 243, or 7.3%, of the 3,312 infant homicides recorded from 1989 through 1998 occurred on the date of birth, according to data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

When based on years of exposure per person, the homicide rate for infants on the first day of life was about 10 times greater than the next most vulnerable group, adults ages 20 to 24.
