Applause for the Design Department

The Feb. 17 magazine was incredibly elegant, starting with the cover image of an incredible green crater. I was not aware what was giving me so much pleasure as I leafed through the magazine until I hit the photograph of the tree in “Lawn Alternatives” (by Susan Heeger). That discontinuous palm shifts abruptly to the right to get out of the way of the stream of words extending into the image. The crown of the tree is actually taken from a lower angle to give an additional sense of height. That stopped me. Cubism has always been its own reward. Then I went back through all of the pages to enjoy the designer’s inventions again, one by one.
