Groups of Hindus attacked Muslims on Monday as religious violence that has killed hundreds in western India continued to smolder.

Roaming mobs returned to Panvad, where 30 shops and homes were burned Sunday by about 2,000 Hindu tribesmen who surrounded the village, Deputy Police Supt. B.L. Parmar said.

Panvad is 60 miles southeast of Ahmadabad in Gujarat state.

On Monday, a large crowd descended on the village. Police said they fired 119 rounds and 140 tear gas shells to disperse the rioters but were overrun in many places. At least 21 policemen were injured, said B.S. Vasava, also a deputy superintendent of police.

Rioting in Gujarat began Feb. 27 when Muslims burned a train full of Hindu activists who had been visiting Ayodhya, where they want to build a temple on the site of a 16th century mosque that they tore down in 1992.
