Identity Theft Needs Better Policing

Share

Re “Identity Theft Rampant, Officials Say,” March 11: We have had two cases of identity theft in our business, one in the amount of $56,000 and one in the amount of $250,000. In both cases the police departments involved were absolutely uninterested in even taking a report.

In the first case, I was told that since the bank would reimburse me for the forged checks that it was the ultimate loser and I had absolutely no status in the case. Bank of America was also uninterested in making a police report or following through, since the amount involved was too small for it to bother.

In the second case, we contacted everyone from the Secret Service on down. Each agency told us someone else was responsible. In both cases we were unable to find any government agency that was the slightest bit interested. What is a citizen to do about this growing problem?
