Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld had a growth removed from his neck Friday, the Pentagon announced.

Scans and examination of the growth--called a lipoma--indicated it was benign, a Pentagon statement said, adding that the tissue was sent for tests to confirm that.

Dr. John Casler removed the growth from Rumsfeld’s neck in a 90-minute operation, and Rumsfeld returned to his office afterward, the statement said.

The lipoma was discovered March 9 during Rumsfeld’s annual physical examination at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
