Farming in Zimbabwe and Flawed Election

Share

Re “Seizure of Farms in Mugabe’s Zimbabwe,” letters, March 13: I used to cover Africa for the Christian Science Monitor. It’s useful to know that at least some resettlements have been successful and brought prosperity to Africans. The difficult fact is that whites wrested land from Africans some 70 to 80 years ago and the Africans were just as upset as the white farmers now are. The white farmers find themselves at an unfortunate turn of the meat grinder of history.

Yes, it’s also unfortunate that many of the resettled Africans do not have the skills and agricultural techniques to make a success of farming. But others do seem to have them.

Heard my wife chuckling as she read the paper this morning (March 14). She was reading President Bush’s thoughts about the Zimbabwe election. I quote, “We do not recognize the outcome of the election because we think it’s flawed.” I guess it was because Bush is an expert on flawed elections. It is a pleasure to read something funny in the news these days.
