Getting an Elliptical Workout

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Question: You recently mentioned an elliptical machine but didn’t explain what it is. Also, is a rowing machine appropriate for someone with low-back problems?

Answer: An elliptical machine simulates walking, stepping, cycling and skiing using an elliptical motion with low or no impact. It’s designed for all levels and can offer a good workout without stressing joints. However, the term “elliptical machine” is broad--not all machines are cross-trainers, and not all offer a full-body workout.

As for back problems, an elliptical machine should provide a safe, low-impact aerobic workout (provided you don’t increase the elevation). I’d also recommend a recumbent bike or treadmill. Hold off on the rowing machine--the motion could stress your lower back.
