Unattended Backpack Leads to LAX Evacuation
An unattended piece of luggage left at the Los Angeles International Airport forced an evacuation that lasted nearly two hours Sunday afternoon.
A Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad was dispatched to the airport at 12:29 p.m. to examine the contents of a green backpack left inside the lower level of the airport’s Terminal 1, said Gabby Pacheco, an airport spokeswoman.
As the bomb squad worked, the lower level of the terminal, which mainly houses Southwest Airlines, was cleared. Scores of people were led outside the building. Passengers leaving airplanes landing at the terminal were moved to the back of the concourse.
Shortly after 2 p.m., the evacuation was called off when police found no explosives in the backpack.
