From Times Wire Reports

Portugal’s Social Democrats drove the Socialists from power as voters swung right and gave conservative parties a majority in parliament for the first time in seven years.

The Social Democrats pledged to cut corporate taxes, slash spending and sell off some state companies to revive the economy. But their narrow victory margin means they may have to negotiate a coalition with the rightist Popular Party.

Social Democrats won 40.12% of the vote compared with 37.85% for the Socialists. The Popular Party, which opposes immigration and abortion, received 8.75%. The Social Democrats won 102 seats in parliament and the Popular Party got 14, giving them together a slim majority in the 230-seat body.
