Campaign Reform and the 1st Amendment

Share

Now that Congress has passed campaign finance reform it should outlaw newspaper editorials recommending candidates and propositions 60 days before an election too. Even better, why not get rid of the 1st Amendment completely? It causes more trouble than it’s worth.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is not Winston Churchill and campaign finance reform is not World War II, but McCain has earned the title of statesman. McCain’s accomplishment in cultivating this successful bipartisan reform measure and his courageous defiance in the face of his own party’s stubborn criticism are reminiscent of the great Churchill’s cross-party coalition government, which his own party viewed as a defilement of the Conservative “nest” rather than an achievement in national unity in May 1940.

McCain’s efforts will now force President Bush to sign this reform, which he has called “unilateral disarmament,” and then let’s all watch as conservative hypocrite Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) takes it to court (March 22).
