House Panel Rejects Light Pollution Plan
A plan to reduce light pollution that threatens Arizona’s astronomical observatories was voted down in a state House committee amid business opposition.
“Of all the bills, I think this one would have the greatest positive impact on the state,” its sponsor, Rep. Jeff Hatch-Miller (R-Paradise Valley), said.
With amendments that were added before the vote, the bill would have required the state and cities of 50,000 people or more to shield outdoor lighting so it is directed toward the ground and not into the sky. The rules would have applied to new or replacement lighting.
