Robberies Spur Tighter Security at Heathrow
The British government, alarmed by two armed robberies at Heathrow Airport despite post-Sept. 11 security measures, announced wider criminal checks on staff and tighter restrictions on access to sensitive areas.
On Feb. 11, an armed gang stole more than $6 million from a British Airways security vehicle.
On March 19, robbers stole $3.2 million being transferred from a South African Airlines flight to a security van.
The measures include a new standard for issuing passes to restricted zones and new requirements for the recovery and voiding of security passes.
