Iranian Court Summons Dissident

Iran’s hard-line Revolutionary Court has summoned a top opposition leader who returned home from the U.S. two weeks ago despite a warrant for his arrest on charges of subversion.

Ibrahim Yazdi, 70, an aide to the late supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and a former government minister, had been undergoing cancer therapy in the United States. He was ordered to return home last year to face charges of acting against state security.

“The court has sent Yazdi a summons, or more accurately, an invitation,” Abbasali Alizadeh, the head of the Tehran judiciary, told state radio Thursday.

It was not immediately clear whether Yazdi, secretary-general of the banned Freedom Movement, was to be charged or interrogated.

“We received a summons; it was very polite. He should attend court within three working days, but there was no mention of charges,” a relative of Yazdi said. “He will go to court Saturday.”
