Johns Hopkins Dean Confirmed to Head NIH
WASHINGTON, D.C.
The Senate confirmed Elias Zerhouni, executive vice dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, as the next director of the National Institutes of Health.
The Algeria-born radiologist will take over the nation’s premier biomedical research agency, which funds more than 2,000 biomedical projects in the United States.
The voice vote came just hours after the Senate health committee approved the nomination.
During his confirmation hearing, Zerhouni, 50, expressed support for federal funding for research on stem cells from human embryos.
