Secession Plans Back on Track, Governors Say
MADAGASCAR
Provincial governors in Madagascar have said they have decided to carry out a threat to break away from central rule.
Five of the island’s six governors appeared on television Saturday displaying documents that they said would formalize their secession bid, in support of President Didier Ratsiraka.
Marc Ravalomanana, mayor of the capital, Antananarivo, was declared president by a court last Monday, but provincial governors loyal to veteran leader Ratsiraka have not accepted the ruling.
One of the five, the governor of Antsiranana province, in the north, has already declared independence.
