Divisible Whole Wheat

Share

The big artisan breads behind the counter at Le Pain Quotidien Bakery, which has shops in New York and Europe, are made in an Old World style with natural leavening and Belgian flour. But don’t worry about buying a whole loaf and having it go stale before you can eat it all; you can buy fractions of loaves. The bakery sells half or quarter loaves of its 4 1/2-pound whole-wheat bread and half loaves of its 2-pound walnut bread and its five-grain and raisin bread. The delicious 1 1/2-pound rye bread, though, can only be purchased as a whole loaf.

4 1/2-pound whole-wheat loaf, $9.50; half loaf, $5; and one-quarter loaf, $2.75. Two-pound walnut loaf, $5.50; half loaf, $3. Two-pound five-grain and raisin loaf, $5.50; half loaf, $3.50. One-and-a-half-pound rye loaf, $3.75. All from Le Pain Quotidien Bakery and Communal Table, 9630 S. Santa Monica Blvd., Beverly Hills, (310) 859-1100 and 11702 Barrington Court, Brentwood, (310) 476-0969.
