WASHINGTON, D.C.

Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) is making “remarkable progress” in his recuperation from April heart surgery and should be off a ventilator within days, a physician and family friend said.

Helms can now sit up in bed, watch TV and communicate with visitors, said Dr. Bertram Coffer.

Helms had surgery April 25 to fit his heart with a pig valve. He had similar surgery 10 years ago, but the valves only last about a decade.
