Delegation to Visit China to Reopen Talks
TAIWAN
Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian said today that he will send a delegation to China in August to get negotiations between the island and the mainland going again.
“The two sides must reopen the door to negotiation so as to reduce misunderstanding and miscalculation,” the president said during a visit to Kinmen island. “The first step to resume talks is to exchange visits.”
Taiwan and China have been at odds since nationalist forces took refuge on the island at the end of a civil war won by the Communists in 1949. Beijing considers the island a renegade province.
