CURE: Cancer Updates, Research & Education, Vol. 1, No. 1, Spring 2002

Published by Cancer Information Group, 80 pages

Overview: This new quarterly magazine, from a Dallas-based publishing company managed by cancer doctors and researchers, is being distributed free to patients and caregivers at least through the end of this year. It’s designed to help patients navigate clinical trials, share the experiences of other cancer patients and understand the terminology that’s being thrown at them. Upcoming issues are scheduled for release in June, September and December.

What works: The first issue includes pieces on getting a second opinion, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, cancer fatigue, medication-related brain fog, and updates on new drugs. The magazine includes a glossary and “toolbox” of resources, including valuable Web sites and phone numbers for specific malignancies. Readers are also likely to benefit from the magazine’s clear illustrations and the way it breaks down information to avoid overload.
