From Times Wire Reports

A weeklong heat wave has pushed the temperature in southeastern India as high as 120 degrees and killed more than 50 people, government officials and news reports said.

The deaths in Andhra Pradesh state were caused by dehydration, state Relief Commissioner D.C. Roshaiah said. He said the heat wave is likely to continue for a few more days.

Government officials urged people to stay indoors and drink plenty of water.

The state’s chief weather officer, C.V.V. Bhadram, attributed the heat wave to winds blowing from the desert in northwestern India.
