Park Geun Hye, daughter of a former South Korean military ruler, dined with North Korean leader Kim Jong Il on Monday and drove to the South a day later through the demilitarized zone that has bisected the peninsula since the 1950-53 Korean War.

She said in Seoul that she had asked Kim whether he would visit the South as agreed at a landmark summit in June 2000 with the South’s president, Kim Dae Jung.

“He replied that he will honor the promise,” Park said.
