U.S. Should Rein In Israelis, Not Palestinians

Share

Re “It’s Too Early for a Palestine State,” Commentary, May 14: Avi Davis should certainly provoke a large and vocal response with his call for a return to the 19th century, the century of European imperialism. Every caricature from that period appears in Davis’ polemic. I find it hard to credit that in these supposedly modern times there are still some who believe that it is the white man’s duty to bring enlightenment to the hapless Palestinians. But, it is our burden, so we must lead them out of the error of their ways--as soon as we crush them, of course.

Looking at the recent involvement of the U.S. in the Mideast, it seems to me that the hapless people we need to establish hegemony over are probably the Israelis. Despite all the money, weaponry and political cover we have given them, they seem unable to establish a state of internal peace and security. Yes, it is a dirty job; but it is our duty, as the great white warriors, to occupy Israel and lead the benighted Israelis in the ways of progress and enlightenment.

When will it not be “too early for a Palestine state” for supporters of Likud and the radical right in Israel? It has been 54 years now since the U.S. breathed life into the state of Israel. It’s time now for the U.S., in the name of justice and humanitarianism, to do the same for the people of Palestine. If it has to wait for Ariel Sharon and Likud it will never happen.

The disgusting pictures of the inside of the Church of the Nativity (May 11) raise the question: What if Christians were to blaspheme one of Islam’s holy shrines? The seeming outrage and propaganda would be endless.
