From Times Wire Reports

Colombian soldiers and investigators reached the site of an intense clash between rebels and an outlawed paramilitary group and found about 50 corpses.

Near the village of Alto de Minas in northwestern Colombia, they counted 47 dead men and one dead woman in uniforms of the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, an anti-guerrilla militia. The guerrillas were believed to have carried their dead away.

Rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC, apparently launched a surprise attack Tuesday on the paramilitary fighters as they camped outside Alto de Minas, 190 miles northwest of Bogota, the capital.
