Separate Cars and SUVs in Parking Lots

Share

Re “SUV Surge Driving Out Small Parking Slots,” May 21:

Rather than eliminate compact parking spaces, cities, malls and shopping centers would better serve the driving public if they would divide the parking lots into two sections: one for cars, regular or compact--and one for SUVs, mini-vans and trucks; and really enforce parking in the appropriate section. This would eliminate a lot of accidents and potential accidents.

Have you ever parked a regular-sized car next to other regular cars but when you are ready to leave you are surrounded by those ugly behemoths? Just try to see in order to back out safely. It’s impossible, and if the parking lot is busy you have to put yourself and the cars driving by at risk of an accident because you have to back out blindly.

Several times, out of desperation, I’ve asked people walking by if they would act as spotters and signal me when it was clear. Dividing parking lots into two sections would make much more sense than eliminating compact parking spaces.
