Ramirez Off-Target on Terrorist Attacks
Michael Ramirez’s political cartoon (Commentary, May 23) strikes me as remarkably insensitive. In the wake of rumors about more New York landmarks being targeted for terrorist attacks he has depicted the Statue of Liberty standing on a stool and holding up her skirt like the proverbial housewife panicking over a mouse. Not only is this insulting to women (who are usually the ones in the household who take care of vermin) but it is extremely insulting to New Yorkers.
Ramirez seems to forget that New York actually has been attacked, and quite viciously. It is absolutely understandable for New Yorkers to be nervous--or did he think the citizens of the Big Apple were supposed to be thick-skinned toughs who shrug off everything?

Surely it’s a sign of the weakness of our intelligence systems that it’s only now, eight months after the 9/11 attacks, that a full inquiry into why they so obviously failed to protect us is being considered.
