1,700 Customers Lose Phone Service

Share

SBC Pacific Bell crews were working around the clock Wednesday to restore telephone service to as many as 1,700 homes and businesses in Van Nuys, officials said. Customers--about 70% of them residential--lost service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when city workers laying conduit for a traffic signal severed a phone cable line at the southwest corner of Gilmore Street and Kester Avenue.

Repairing the cable requires splicing 2,400 pairs of line back together--a time-consuming process, spokeswoman Jennifer Langan said. Service is expected to be fully restored by 9 p.m. Friday.
