The American Red Cross has closed an emergency shelter for victims of last Friday’s explosion and fire at an Encino apartment building, but will continue to offer aid to displaced residents, officials said Wednesday.

One man was fatally burned and about 300 residents were driven from their homes by the explosion in the 5300 block of Newcastle Avenue.

Red Cross caseworkers will be available weekdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Valley Service Center, 14717 Sherman Way in Van Nuys, to help evaluate needs and provide financial assistance.
