Police searched 27 apartments across Germany in raids targeting suspected Islamic extremists, officials said.

The raids in cities including Frankfurt, Muenster and Hamburg followed a year of observation of 25 people suspected of founding Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a radical group that calls for the creation of a Muslim state in Central Asia, said Job Tilmann of the Frankfurt prosecutor’s office.

One man was arrested in Frankfurt, but the charges stemmed from an unrelated case, Tilmann said. Several others were detained temporarily.
