Voters Narrowly Reject Tough Asylum Rules

By a wafer-thin margin, Swiss voters rejected a proposal to adopt the toughest asylum rules in the industrialized world.
Just 3,422 of 2.2 million votes cast separated the “no” and “yes” camps. “No” votes were stronger among French-speaking Swiss, while a majority of German-speakers voted yes.
Government officials had worried that the measure would endanger the nation’s humanitarian traditions but said they would take seriously growing concern over asylum seekers’ roles in crime.
